Most all of us have budgets of some type that we work under when it comes to PC gaming. You can stay on a budget and still get a great performing graphics card. All of the cards on this list can be had for under $400 if you shop wisely and all of them perform well for PC gaming on the latest titles.

1. ATI X1900 XTX Graphics Card

While the X1900 XTX is getting a bit long in the tooth when compared to some of the newer cards on the market, it is still a fantastic performer. If you are an ATI fan looking to spend under $400, the X1900 XTX is a fantastic choice.

2. ATI X1900 CrossFire Edition

If you are looking to run dual graphics cards and already have an X1900 XTX or X1900 XT adding this X1900 CrossFire edition card to a compatible mainboard will have you running one of the fastest dual card setups around. If you shop around you can find the X1900 Crossfire card for under $400.

3. XFX GeForce 7950 GT Extreme

If you are looking for a fantastically performing NVIDIA graphics card that also happens to be completely passive cooled, the 7950 GT is a great option. This card is at the bottom of the $300 - $400 price range and frequently can be found for under $300. The performance of this card for PC gaming for the price is hard to beat. This also makes a fantastic choice for dual purpose PCs that will see duty as media centers as well.

4. ATI X1900XT Graphics Card

The lower cost card in the X1900 high end series is the X1900 XT. If you intend to run X1900 CrossFire, this is the card to get. The X1900 XTX performs no faster in CrossFire mode than the X1900 XT. If you are looking for single card gaming on the ATI platform, this is also an excellent choice.

5. NVIDIA 7900 GTX

The NVIDIA 7900 GTX is a fantastic performer for single card NVIDIA performance in the $400 and below price range. You have to do some shopping to find this card sub $400, but it can be done. Don't expect to get the flagship models in the 7900 GTX range like the overclocked XFX XXX edition for under $400, but some of the base model cards can be had and will perform very well.
