3 Mice You Can Use (Almost) Anywhere

By , About.com Guide

Both Microsoft and Logitech -- two of the biggest players in the computer peripherals market -- have mice that are designed to be used on traditionally inoperable surfaces. Instead of being tethered to a mousepad, or even a desk, these mice let you take use your laptops on granite kitchen counters, carpeted floors, or even couch cushions.

1. Logitech Anywhere MX Mouse

Logitech’s Anywhere MX is a travel-sized wireless mouse that can even be used on clear glass -- a competitive advantage over Microsoft’s mice. It’s the most expensive of the trio here, but it comes with such features as Hyper-fast scrolling and a nano receiver. Our tests found it to be extremely comfortable for use even during long periods of mousing.

2. Microsoft Wireless Mouse 2000

Microsoft’s Wireless Mouse 2000 is a no-frills, full-sized mouse. What it lacks in features (no extra programmable buttons, for one), it aims to make up in price. Although it doesn’t have a nano recover, it does come with a placeholder for the receiver it does have -- a big selling point. It can also be used with the left and right hand.

3. Microsoft Comfort Mouse 4500

The Comfort Mouse 4500 from Microsoft does come with extra programmable buttons, and it also comes in a choice of several colors. This wired mouse is the most affordable of Microsoft’s line of mice with BlueTrack, which is what Microsoft calls the laser technology that enables these mice to be used on such non-traditional surfaces. It’s still a bit pricey for a wired mouse, so the BlueTrack is only a plus if it’s something you’ll actually use.
