Review: Logitech MX Revolution Wireless Mouse

A High-functioning, Multi-purposed Wireless Mouse

About.com Rating 3.5

From , former About.com Guide

Logitech's MX Revolution laser mouse might look like something the Air Force designed, and the price tag would tend to support that notion, but all that clever design comes with ultra high function as well.

Plenty of mice come with multiple buttons that you can assign to various purposes, but the MX Revolution mouse has pre-programmed buttons with specific purposes like a fully integrated internet search function, all designed to work with your Windows operating system.

At a Glance

Pros

  • Several unobtrusive, programmable buttons
  • Attractive and comfortable ergonomic design
  • Wireless
  • Laser technology allows for precise movement and scrolling

Cons

  • Short battery life
  • Only designed for right-handed people

Features

  • High-functioning, Programmable Buttons

Whether we're talking about the scroll wheel or the thin, unobtrusive individual buttons, all the little perks and functions on the MX Revolution mouse are high-performance. The scroll wheel employs MicroGear Precision to allow ultimate control over your scrolling action, including high-speed scrolling and pinpoint stops.

The driver software for the buttons is also highly advanced, with a few impressive presettings, including a customizable search engine button designed to pull up a search page in the blink of an eye. There is also a "quick flip" mode for documents that allows you to switch in between them easily and conveniently.

Performance

The buttons work well, and the ergonomic design is extremely comfortable. It's literally only useable by people who are right-handed, however, as the distinctive thumb groove and buttons are only located on the right side of the mouse.

Even with the pre-programming, the buttons are versatile and may be individually programed. Their design is very thin and smooth, making them barely noticeable as you rest your fingers in the grooves. Buttons that aren't distracting may seem like a no-brainer on a computer mouse, but there are plenty out there that seem almost more of a burden than any kind of help.

The only real flaw in the mouse is the battery life span. This issue is fairly commonplace among wireless peripherals, but it's particularly bothersome on the MX Revolution. The saving grace is that the battery is rechargeable, so it's not even an issue if you simply charge it overnight, or whenver you're not using it. But some power users on their PC for 12 hours at a time might be miffed by the idea that they outlast their hardware. Logitech seems to have accounted for this problem by including an "on/off" switch on the mouse to save power.

In all, it's a high-performance mouse with a high-performance price tag, but anyone willing to drop close to $100.00 on a single mouse will be expecting results, and Logitech's MX Revolution wireless mouse will be able to deliver that in spades.
