The Bottom Line

The Epson Stylus CX4800 is a good printer for buyers on a budget. The photo quality output of the Epson Stylus CX4800 is no where near as good as the photo quality on the Epson RX700, then again the RX700 is almost four times the cost of the Epson Stylus CX4800. However, for a mere $40 more you can get the Dell Photo 940 that has superior photo output than the Epson Stylus CX4800 and an LCD screen for printing without your PC.

Description

  • Photo print quality is decent, but with a slightly higher budget you can get much better prints.

  • Small footprint of the Epson Stylus CX4800 makes it easy to find a place for it on your desk.

Guide Review - Epson Stylus CX4800

Features of the Epson Stylus CX4800

The Epson Stylus CX4800 features an optimized 5760 x 1440 printing resolution. The color print speed is rated at 19 ppm and the black speed is 20 ppm. Printing my 8x10 test photo on best photo quality took three and a half minutes.

The most obvious feature the Epson Stylus CX4800 is missing is an LCD screen to allow you to print without your PC. This omission may not be a big deal to some users as editing a photo is best done from your PC anyway. That said, users who like to print without using a PC beware.

The scanner features a 1200 x 2400 dpi resolution and did a decent job of scanning my test documents. The bit depth of the Epson Stylus CX4800 is 48 bit.

A good feature of the Epson Stylus CX4800 is the separate ink tanks for each of the three color pigment and the black cartridge. The Epson DURABright inks are rated to last 100 years.

The Epson Stylus CX4800 also features a card reader that reads five common media card types.

Epson Stylus CX4800 in Use

The Epson Stylus CX4800 was easy and straight forward to set up. The scanner is easy to use and while not the highest resolution, works well. The card reader is difficult to use and took me several attempts to get my xD card inserted properly.

The photo print quality was decent, but better photo prints can be had for a little more money. Text output was good and characters were always clear and legible.
