Guide Review - Motorola SBG900 Wireless Cable Modem Gateway

Motorola modems are some of the most common modems on the market and are in fact the modems that Sudden Link uses here in my local area. This particular modem is different from the standard ones cable companies stick you with by offering integrated wireless router with security.

To set this modem up you will need to connect the modem to your cable from the wall and then to your PC or router. Once you have done that you will need to call your ISP and have them provision the modem to get everything working. Once the modem is provisioned, you are ready to connect wirelessly and use your internet, assuming you don’t want to add security of some sort to the wireless portion.

I suggest anyone using wireless service to use security like WEP. Setting up WEP was very easy on the Motorola SBG900. You can choose between 64-bit and 128-bit security and set up the system to only accept access from specific MAC address to further secure your network. Transmission speeds are up to 54Mbps, and I stayed near that speed in all rooms of my home and really only noticed speeds dropping when I was very far from the modem, about 200 feet or so outside my home.

The built-in firewall offers a variety of services to keep hackers and viruses out of your network like Stateful Packet Inspection, DMZ, intrusion detection and DoS attack protection. OS compatibility is with Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT, ME and XP as well as Mac OS 8 and up and Unix. In addition to the external antenna, you can see the Motorola SBG900 Wireless Cable Modem Gateway also has an internal antenna as well for improved range and performance.

Overall, the Motorola SBG900 Wireless Cable Modem Gateway is a very good cable modem that also features a very good wireless router built in. If you want to simplify your wireless network, the Motorola SBG900 Wireless Cable Modem Gateway is a great way to do it.
