What is a Down-firing Subwoofer?

From Mark Casey, for About.com

Definition: A down-firing subwoofer, as opposed to a side-firing subwoofer, is a large speaker that faces directly into the ground, usually as part of a surround sound system or other large speaker set, meant exclusively to produce bass. When a subwoofer is facing the ground, it increases the "rumbling" that results from large bass noises in movies or music.
