SLS Audio Q-Line Silver

SLS Audio Q-Line Silver

SLS Audio
If you have never heard of SLS Audio, you are missing out on some supremely good quality speakers, headphones and home theater systems. I had the opportunity to test the SLS Audio Q-Line Silver home theater in a box for use with a media center PC for gaming and movie watching on the computer. If you are looking for good sound and deep immersion in your PC games, the SLS Audio Q-Line Silver delivers.

Features of the SLS Audio Q-Line Silver

Speakers

Included with the SLS Audio Q-Line Silver are all the speakers and wire that you will need to connect the system to your PC or to your TV with the exception of a Toslink optical cable to use with a S/PDIF digital connection.

The satellite speakers are large units that feature high quality construction and utilize ribbon tweeters. The satellites measure in at 4.5" x 15" x 4.7" and are a two-way, closed box and magnetically shielded design. Drivers are 2x4" polycomposite woofer and a single 1.25" ribbon tweeter with an impedance of 6 ohms and can handle 100W of power.

SLS includes a large active sub that is in its own ported enclosure. The subwoofer itself is a 8" optimized long-throw design with a composite paper cone and rubber surround. Frequency response for the sub is 28Hz to 100 Hz and power handling is 100W RMS. The subs enclosure is quite large measuring in at 9.6" x 14.8" x 19.5" and the sub itself weighs in at 33 pounds.

Another cool feature of the sub is that it has its own volume control as well as a toggle that gives you the option between auto on and always on modes for the sub. Set it to auto-on and the sub only comes on at higher volume levels.

Amp

The specifications for the amp are too long to print in its entirety so I will hit the most important and refer you to the site at the link above for the full list. There are a number of input and output options on the back, the only connectivity options missing are HDMI and S-Video.

You get the S/PDIF input for digital sound as well as digital coaxial and a number of RCA inputs for your theater system. The vast majority of current sound cards and mainboards found in current computers feature S/PDIF digital output, so for your media or gaming PC that is the most important connectivity option.

Several different sound modes are supports with the amp including; DTS, Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic, and Dolby Pro Logic II. The amp can also transform the sound field of two-channel sources to make them sound like you are listening in different venues such as a theater, hall, stadium or church. Again the amp has many more specs, see the manufactures site for full details.

SLS Audio Q-Line Silver in Use

Set-up

Setting the SLS Audio Q-Line Silver up for use with my PC was a snap. I used the S/PDIF out on my Abit AW9D-Max main board and only had to connect one cable, the TOSlink digital cable which is not included with the system. Once I had the TOSlink cable plugged in and the speakers connected I was ready to test the system out.

Movie Watching

As expected the SLS Audio Q-Line Silver is a serious home theater system and excels at movie playback. Using Nero 7 Platinum I was able to enjoy my flicks in Dolby Digital Surround Sound and it was a blast. I like to test speakers with Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. I particularly like the scenes at the start of the movie for Bilbo's birthday with the fireworks.

These scenes are a good mix of deep bass from the explosions with the higher pitched sounds of voices and screaming. The bass produced by the SLS Audio Q-Line Silver's sub is thunderous and deep. This system has the deepest bass that I have had the pleasure to hear on my PC. I felt like I was sitting front row for a huge Fourth of July fireworks show. The bass was deep and room filling, the type of bass that sucks you into a scene and makes you feel a part of the action.

Even with the deep bass, the voices and other sounds in the scene weren't overwhelmed by the bass. Voices and environmental sounds in the scenes were still clear, crisp and easy to discern from one another. The next best sound experience I have had with this scene of LOTR was when I saw it in the theater. The SLS Audio Q-Line Silver is that good.

PC Gaming

As much fun as I had with the movies using the Silver, PC gaming is the ultimate in this system, it was flat awesome. I played lots and lots of the new Battlefield 2142 demo on this system. The deep bass made the explosions both sound and feel like they were in the same room with me.

At the same time the whine of jet engines over head and the voices of other players calling for medics was fantastic. The SLS Audio Q-Line Silver single handedly delivered the most immersive and satisfying gaming experience I have ever had on the PC.
