What Kind of Mouse User Are You?

By , About.com Guide

This site has a wealth of information and buying advice for computer mice. Still not sure which way you should lean? See if you fit into any of the following buying scenarios:

Judy is a college student who spends more as much time in the library as she does in the dorms. Her dorm is cramped, so she often ends up working on bed and using the laptop’s touchpad. But when she’s staked out a tablet at the library, she finds she’s more productive using an actual mouse.

Recommendation: A wireless travel mouse with a nano receiver would be a good fit for Judy. She can keep the mouse tucked away in her bag and leave the nano receiver plugged into the laptop.

The Tanner family gets a lot of use out of their laptop. With four computer-literate people in the house, the laptop is constantly in use and frequently carted around from room to room. Unfortunately, it seems like the mouse is left behind at least half the time, and someone is always complaining that they can’t find it.

Recommendation: The Tanners should get a Genius wireless mouse with a Stick-n-Go mount and BlueEye technology. The Stick-n-Go is a small piece of plastic that affixes to the top of a closed laptop. It allowed the mouse to be attached to the laptop for easy and safe transportability. BlueEye, meanwhile, is designed to let the mouse be used on nearly any surface. This will let the Tanners surf and scroll wherever and on whatever they desire.

Ronald is the definition of a cube monkey. He lives, breathes and eats at his desk, and his posture is beginning to show it. He’s been feeling aches in his wrists and wants to heed off, or at least minimize, any potential repetitive stress injuries.

Recommendation: Ronald definitely needs to invest in an ergonomic mouse. While he may face a learning curve, the fact that he’s already feeling aching in his wrists indicates that it’s a good time to switch.

Maggie has a laptop but she hardly ever uses it, although it is displayed prominently on a little computer nook in her dining room. She would like something that doesn’t looks like it belongs in a cubicle.

Recommendation: Style and attractiveness are important factors for Maggie. Since she doesn’t use the computer all that often, she’s in a good position to trade ergonomics for looks, and even a little fun. A little “wow’ factor wouldn’t hurt, especially in such a visible area.

Options: Microsoft Arc Touch

Tom constantly loses his mice. He even tried using a Genius Stick-n-Go mouse, and he still lost it. As a result, he doesn’t want to spend a lot of money on a wireless mouse, but he still wants something decent to use.

Recommendation: Cheap doesn’t have to mean junk. Sometimes a bare-bones wireless mouse is all you need, and there are several models on the market that will get the job done without breaking the bank.

Chris is sick of using a mouse altogether, be it wired or wireless. He would like to try something new, but he’s not quite sure what else is out there.

Recommendation: Chris could step outside the mousing box by using a trackball or a touchpad. These can take some getting used to, but once the learning curve is adjusted, many users find them much more enjoyable than traditional mice.

Options: Kensington Trackball with Scroll Ring or Logitech Wireless Touchpad
