Plenty of people live long, happy lives without ever changing their monitor's settings from what they were right out of the box. Others, however, aren't so lucky -- or so forgiving.

Whether you're a persnickety power user who wants all your hardware calibrated perfectly for optimum performance, a consumer experiencing nightmarish factory default settings, or just a regular PC user who wants to make sure your monitor looks the way it should, it doesn't hurt to know what those settings mean, and how to use them to your advantage.
