Samsung Wants to be Starting Something

Monday February 8, 2010
Samsung said they're going to ship their S2 Portable external hard drive preloaded with Michael Jackson's "THIS IS IT" movie. Not exactly my cup of tea, but the idea of preloading a hard drive with movie content is a neat one and one I'm sure you'll see more of in the future.

This S2 Portable version will only be sold in Europe initially, but the company said in a press release that "availability in other regions will be determined following the initial launch."

(And please forgive the lame headline. I went over Jackson's song list and it was the best I could come up with -- feel free to chime in with something better.)

iPad Typing Gets a “Meh” from CNN

Saturday February 6, 2010
I haven't tried the iPad or its separate keyboard yet, but here's a review from someone at CNN who has. John D. Sutter gives the iPad's onscreen typing a thumbs-down and reminds that Apple will be offering an external keyboard. Terrible onscreen typing alone could sink the iPad, at least once it gets through its early-adopter firestorm. Although I think the external keyboard a great idea to maximize the iPad's potential, no one is going to use it if they want the iPad to function primarily as an e-reader.

Just Don’t Lose It

Sunday January 31, 2010
Lockheed Martin and IronKey recently introduced a USB drive they said would contain everything a computer user needs (without the actual computer): an operating system, software and files. The IronClad will reportedly plug into virtually any computer, using that computer as a hosting machine for files and applications. According to Lockheed, the files will never "touch" anything on the hosting computer, and the devices can be remotely monitored and controlled for security purposes.

I haven't seen the device (only learned about it through a press release), but it looks like a cool and practical concept, especially for heavy commuters and business travelers. The biggest disadvantage I see is the possibility of losing it -- an underlying fear of mine when it comes to technology.
